Oral history recording with Enzo Calzaghe, father of British boxer, Joe Calzaghe. He was born in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy and moved to Bedford when he was two but finally settled in Wales after meeting his wife in Cardiff. Part 1 of 5 (AV 11352 - 11356). 00.01 Pietro Vincenzo Calzaghe was born in Sassari, Sardinia on the 29th June, 1949. His paternal grandfather was Antonio who was a builder, his grandmother was Marguerita and they were from were from Ittiri. He emigrated when he was two years old so doesn’t have memories of Italy before then. His father immigrated to Bedford to work for the Brickyards. His father went to the Spanish Civil War at around fifteen and was prisoner of war in Majorca for two years. He worked in the building trade, like his father, but then became a policeman. However he had to leave as he was married before the age of twenty eight, which wasn’t allowed.
