Roman samian plate with oculist's stamp
Samian form Dr 18 plate manufactured in southern Gaul. The centre has an unusual two-line stamp:
L.IVL:SEN[ISCR OCODAD[ASPRITV
L(uci) Iul(i) Senis cr|ocod(es) ad aspr(itudines)
This is die 2a of L. Iulius Senex of La Grafesenque cut in the form of an oculist's stamp. It is smaller than true oculist's stamps and may have been created specifically to stamp samian pottery rather than ointment. The stamp translates as 'L.Iulius Senex's yellow ointment for sore eyes' or 'Lucius Iulius Senex's saffron salve for granulation (of the eye-lids)'.
RIB II 2446.25 (iii) and Boon, G.C., 1983. Britannia xiv, I. cf. RIB II 2446.25 (i & ii), both samian cups (Dr 27 and Dr 33), impressed using the same stamp, from London.
