Sampler
Cotton ground embroidered with coloured silks in satin, split and back stitches. Floral zigzag stem border with national emblems in each corner: rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock. At top: royal monogram of George V surmounted by crown and flanked by lion motifs. In centre: rectangular compartment containing inscription commemorating the Silver Jubilee of George V, flanked by dates. At base: Buckingham Palace, flanked by figures of guardsmen. Probably made from pattern or kit. Inscription: G R V SILVER JUBILEE OF THEIR MAJESTIES KING GEORGE V & QUEEN MARY
This sampler was made in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. The pattern probably came from one of the numerous home craft magazines which were hugely popular in the 1920s and 1930s. These publications often came with free gifts of needlework patterns and transfers.
