Roman stone altar
Between the two undecorated bolsters on top of the capital, there is large round shallow focus with a central protruberance. The mouldings of the capital surround three sides but the back is plain, which may indicate that the altar had originally stood against a wall. On the right hand side of the shaft is the handle and upper portion of a jug. The die is plain, but the carefully smoothed surface possibly suggests that it once bore a painted decoration. Mortar adheres to the front of the stone as a result of its structural reuse.
