Seal impression: Durham Episcopal
The bishop seated, enthroned in a completely new style; his feet sandalled, his hands gloved, chasuble emroidered with a mill-rind cross (the arms of BEK) - such a chasuble be actually possessed; beneath the throne are two blazons: dext. a triple-towered castle, in allusion to the bishop's office as Constable of the TOWER OF LONDON; sin. a mill-rind cross, BEK. Above the bishop's head: a lion of ENGLAND. (This is the first known appearance of heraldry on an English episcopal seal, and taken together with the bishop's seated posture, may reflect a desire on his part to magnify his temporal power).
