Casgliadau Arlein

These are moderately preserved remains from the inhumation burial of an adolescent (14-17 years) who's sex in undetermined.

The burial is from phase M: 995-1122 AD They were buried in an extended supine position in a simple grave oriented West-East.

Underneath this burial were the remains of a horse skull 2025.7H/8.189, context (1212) Within the same grave fill were some small animal bone fragments, 2025.7H/8.67 and 2025.7H/8.193

Their bones have Schmorl's Nodes, which are small pit-like depressions caused by herniation as a result of either heavy labour or pregnancy putting strain on the back. Their skull also had a Button Osteoma, which is a benign tumours that develop as small round, button-like growths of bone on the front of the head. This individual had a cranial osteoma on the right parietal. Button Osteomas are not dangerous and cause no discomfort. They're are more common in older males, making this adolescent slightly unusual. The exact cause of Button Osteoma is still unknown.

Their dental health also showed impacted 3rd mandibular molars.
