Roman stone coffin
Bath stone coffin and lid. The lid is in two large pieces.
One of the most popular displays at the National Roman Legion Museum is a stone coffin that contains the partial skeleton of a Roman man. Made from a solid block of Bath stone, the coffin also contains the remains of grave goods that the occupant would need for the journey to the next life, including the base of a shale bowl and fragments of a once-spherical glass perfume or ointment bottle. The coffin dates to about AD 200.
The coffin was found in 1995 at the site of a Roman cemetery just outside Caerleon.
