Flat wooden fluted board with a corresponding fluted roller, turned grip handle at either end of roller.

The linen was laid on the board and the fluted roller was then rolled over it a number of times and the ridges produced in the linen were sewn together, forming the very even and finely gathered finish so often seen in early children's wear.
