Under a triple canopy of transitional design, in three niches, centre: the Father supports His crucified Son; dext. St Milburga (patroness of the town and priory) standing crowned or mitred, holding a book in her right hand, her pastoral staff (crook turned outwards) in her left hand, and at her feet a lion or other animal sejant; sin. St Michael the Archangel (co-patron) bearing in his right hand a shield: a cross; his left hand raises a sword aloft to slay the dragon at his feet. In base, under archways of masonry, three shields: centre: a lion rampant, MONTGOMERY (for Roger of Montgomery, benefactor); dext. A stag trippant, sin. A chevron between three blackamoors’ heads erased, WENLOCK (for John, lord of Wenlock, K.G., at whose request the charter of 1468 was granted). In field, outside the niches, dext. A stag’s head erased, and the inscription: Rog’ (? ‘Rag’); sin. a crutch, and the inscription: hola (suggested as a rebus or motto for John de Wemlock). Border cabled.
