S.S. SAND GALORE, negative
Port bow view of S.S. SAND GALORE entering Cardiff Docks.
The dredging of aggregates for the building industry from the sea-bed of the Bristol Channel dates back to 1912. One of the largest vessels used in this trade was the aptly-named 3,145 gross ton Sand Galore, originally built at Birkenhead in 1935 as the Mersey mud-dredger Hoyle. When this photograph was taken (c. 1964), she was owned by the London-based Sand & Gravel Marketing Co. Ltd. Note the long suction pipe amid-ships which was lowered to the sea-bed to obtain her cargo of sand and gravel.
