Y Gwningen

Dyddiad: 1881

Cyfrwng: olew ar gynfas

Maint: 97.5 x 61.0 cm

Casgliad: Casgliad y Chwiorydd Davies

Tua diwedd ei oes, roedd Manet yn tynnu fwyfwy at fywyd llonydd. Mae'r darlun hwn yn dangos cwningen yn hongian y tu allan rhwng ffenestr a phalis. Mae'n un o bedwar panel addurnol a beintiodd yn ystod yr haf 1881 ger Versailles. Yn y flwyddyn honno cafodd Manet, o'r diwedd, fedal gan y Salon a'i wneud yn Chevalier y Legion d'Honneur. Pwnc traddodiadol yw hwn, ond mae'r arddull rydd yn bendant Argraffiadol. Prynodd Gwendoline Davies y gwaith ym Mharis ym mis Rhagfyr 1917.

When will The Rabbit be back on display, or is it presently on loan?

Hi there James and Terry

I have consulted our Department of Art who have confirmed that the canvas is 97.5 x 61 cms (hxw) as above. I have checked our records and there is nothing on the back of the work that corresponds to the mark you mention. The work is currently on display so it would not be possible to to make an appointment to view the back on this occasion.

Thank you for your enquiry,

Sara

May I please query the dimensions of this marvellously sombre, poignant painting? The measurements given 975 X 610 mm don't correspond with the painting's tall proportions.

We are particularly interested to know if a frame-maker or menuisier's stamp or impressed mark has been recorded on verso stretcher.

We are researching a portrait believed associated with the artist's student, which bears a feint menuiser's stamp of anchor and entwined rope within a c.30mm roundel.

We wonder if the mark is familiar, or whether the Museum's time resources would allow for such obscure inquiry.

Alternatively, may we make an appointment to examine the verso for impressed marks?

Looking fwd to your reply,

James Gorin & Terry Wilcox
