Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of the Duke of Clarence, white earthenware, crackle glaze, oval plinth inscribed in raised gilt capitals over a gilt line. In military dress?, with bright gilding, black shoes, white trousers, white jacket with a red belt, modelled military decorations and medals, blue garter sash from left shoulder, brown hair, moustache modelled but painted flesh colour, standing right hand on hip in front of a grey cannon, cannon wheel (broken off) by right foot, barrel tilted from viewer's left to right placed behind the figure, pile of cannon balls under cannon behind figure's left leg, resting left hand just below mouth of cannon, sword tucked under left arm and tied to belt
