Aur o Gymru’r Oes Efydd

Aur o Gymru'r Oes Efydd

Late Bronze Age gold foil

Dernyn bach crychlyd o ffoil aur a ddarganfuwyd wrth wneud gwaith cloddio archaeolegol yn Llan-faes yw hwn. Mae’r ffoil wedi’i blygu yn ei hanner ac mae oliion rhwygo garw ar dair ochr iddo. Ni wyddom yn iawn pa eitem yr oedd hwn yn ei addurno yn yr Oes Efydd. Yn ystod yr Oes Efydd Ddiweddar, defnyddid ffoil aur i orchuddio creiddiau efydd neu anfetelaidd modrwyau bylchgrwn neu ddarnau bach o emwaith i addurno’r gwallt, y clustiau neu’r trwyn. Mae’n bosib bod y ffoil hwn yn addurno modrwy o’r fath ar un cyfnod.

Gwybodaeth am y darganfyddiad

Enw'r Safle: Llanmaes, Llantwit Major

Cyfeirnod Grid: SS 982 695
Dull Casglu: excavation
Dyddiad: 2008 / June-July

Nodiadau: Settlement assemblage. A gold foil fragment was found during an archaeological excavation of a Bronze Age-Iron Age settlement at Llanmaes. The object was found in Trench J, located to the north-north-east of the central settlement, on top of a metalled, stone surface within a hollow in the bedrock. 31 fragments of prehistoric pottery were also found on this surface, which could be broadly dated to the Middle Bronze Age (1500-1100 BC). A copper alloy pin was also found, which can be dated to the Middle-Late Bronze Age (1300-800 BC). Dating this object poses some difficulties, but the associated material indicates a later Bronze Age date, spanning 1300-800 BC. Other Bronze Age goldwork was recovered from the site, dating to the Middle Bronze Age.
