In this painting some Arab men try to persuade a boy to submit his cockerel to a fight. Known as ‘Orientalism’, this type of exotic subject was very fashionable. Hodgson visited north Africa in 1868 and continued to depict life in Morrocco, Algeria and Tunisia throughout the following decade.
