Obverse. King George III seated (in profile to sinister) on a carved shell-back throne ensigned with a royal crown. The monarch is crowned, but his sceptre and orb are poorly impressed on this example. By his feet is a lion couchant. To either side of the monarch are allegorical figures: On his right stands Justice with sword and scales; beyond stands Piety with palm branch and lamb. On the king’s left stands Britannia with shield: the Union arms, the combined crosses of St Andrew and St George; behind, and towards the field, stands Plenty with cornucopiæ; behind, and between the king and Britannia, stand, dext. Minerva with hlemet and javelin, sin. Hercules with club and lion skin. (Much of this imagery is indistinct upon this impression). The circular shield above the throne is ensigned with a royal crown, and encircled by the Garter withi ts motto; the arms (those used by George I) not visible on this cast. Segmented border.
