PARDOE, Thomas

Thomas Pardoe was employed as a painter at the Cambrian Pottery, Swansea, from about 1795 to 1809. He then worked freelance in Bristol before returning to Wales in the winter of 1820-21 where he decorated the remaining stock of porcelain at the Nantgarw China Works until his death.

Wirephoto published in the Tribune newspaper in 1971. Purchased by David Hurn from MMG Photo Archives. Full title: This earth-weight version of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) which will be used for astronaut training, has been delivered to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration by the Boeing company. The Vehicle, called the "I-G Trainer" because it will be operating exclusively in the Earth's gravity, was built by general Motors' Delco Electronics Division, Boeing's major subcontractor. Boeing is building four flight model LRV's for NASA's Marshall Space flight Centre, Alabama. The first LRV is scheduled to be carried to the moon on the Apollo 15 mission in July, 1971. Technicians are shown here checking the trainer at the Delco Electronics Defence Research Laboratories, Santa Barbara, California. Although similar in appearance to the flight-model lunar vehicle, the trainer wieghs about twice the weight of the flight version. Added strenght is necessary because the astronauts and scientific payload are six times heavier than their weight on the moon. Due to the added weight and far greater use in training, automobile-type tires will be used instead of the wire mesh wheels planned for the flight vehicle.

Full title: A scientist finds himself suspended high above the ground as he tests one of the nation's most advanced research vehicles for the evaluation of tasks that men will perform in the weightless environment of space. The 15-foot tall device, under development by Convair division of General Dynamics, operates on AI Bearings and permits the astronaut to float in mid-air, completely free of friction. Scientist will test reactions to a weightless ride and will experiment with tools and equipment for use in the absence of gravity.

Water is sprayed over protective clothing of engineers to wash away residues as they load fuel into Vanguard rocket's second stage at Cape Carnaveral, Fla. launching site. Rocket is scheduled to be launched today in first attempt by U.S. to thrust a baby moon into outer space. The photograph is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the librarian of the Baltimore Sun Archives Paul M McCardell.
