Silver sixpence token issued by Flintshire Bank. On September 14th, 1811, the Bath Chronicle published: "The Hollywell and Flintshire Bank has issued silver tokens of shillings and sixpences to the standard of the dollar. The device on one side is the County arms, and the Prince of Wales' crest, bearing the date of the 12th August, 1811: - on the reverse 'Flintshire Bank Token', with the value."
Tokens were issued by corporations, tradespersons and businesses to act as alternative currency in exchange for their services. In the early 19th century, this helped compensate for the shortage of official silver currency during the Napoleonic Wars.
