Fujan from Somaliland, mid-20th century. The fujan belonged to Shamis Younis of Butetown, Cardiff, and was inherited from her mother, Fatima Shirwaac. It was presented to Shamis on her marriage in Gabiley, Somaliland, and was subsequently used by her eight children.
A lipwork construction covered in leather casing decorated with stitched on shells and beads. The leather casing has been stitched through the lipwork to hold it in place. It consists of an upper section and a lower section and holds an enamel bowl inside this lower section. The two parts are held together with leather straps that extend to enable carrying. These straps also have stitched on shells and beads. The recess in the top section contains a plaited plant fibre rope.
