Thickened, very abraided rim sherd from an amphora, with clay accretions. Clay accretions on the rim are typical of Gaza (Almagro 54) and Egyptian (Egloff 177) Late Roman amphorae, but the fabric differs from the descriptions of these fabrics givn by Peacock & Williams (1986, 199 &205) in having abundant limestone. However the upright rim and brown slip are matched by examples from Spain (Keay 1984, type LIVD, 279, fig 122). The amphora is probably of eastern Mediterranean origin though it cannot be assigned to a definate type. (Campbell PhD)
