Disc-shaped clay mould, with impression on each face, for counterfeiting a denarius of Caracalla. The mould was handed to the National Museum of Wales in 1951 with 18 coins from the Bryndedwyrdd Hoard, but the date of the mould is inconsistent with the coins that make up the hoard. The mould is highly unlikely therefore to have formed part of the hoard. It may have been found separately in the same area by the finder of the other coins or it may have been collected from elsewhere. Large numbers of clay moulds were found at Lingwell Gate, Yorkshire, between 1697 and 1578, collected by antiquarians and distributed across the UK. Many moulds have been found during excavations elsewhere in England since then, but none are recorded from Wales.
Enw'r Safle: Bryndedwydd, LLangwm
Nodiadau: Part of a hoard of approx. 1700 coins found by a labourer whilst draining a field about half a mile from Goat Inn, near Maesmor, Corwen. These coins were picked up by the Rev. T. Price a few days after the finding of the original Hoard.
