Glamorgan Colliery, photograph
Coal arch erected by miners at Glamorgan Colliery, Llwynypia. The coal arch was a favourite form of welcome employed at this period to commemorate the visit of famous persons - in this case Prince and Princess Alexander of Teck in April 1914. It demonstrated the miners' skill in trimming and cutting coal lumps to form a perfect arch. Flame lamps were still in evidence and steel arches for roadway support had come into use.
