Large, plain socketed axe with oval mouth, broken away on one face, with slightly projecting flat-sided mouldingand slight flash around the inside. The broken off loop was set below the mouth moulding. The axe has near-parallel flat sides forming slight facets along each edge and the blade is only slightly flared. Information taken from Wear, (forthcoming). This axe could possibly be assigned to the Wallington type (Schmidt and Burgess, 1981, 175-6) thought to date to the Wilburton (Period 6) period between the mid 12th and mid 10th centuries BC (Needham, 1996). However, the metal composition of this axe does not correspond with other material of Wilburton date (Northover, 1982) suggesting it may belong to the Ewart Park period.
Enw'r Safle: Margam, Neath Port Talbot
Nodiadau: Found on Margam Beach where exposed by marine erosion. The axes were spread over a length of 4 metres but were almost certainly once a hoard.
