Tall vase or pot, red earthenware, composed of five bulbous sections wheel thrown and joined one on top of the other; the surface is embellished in a remarkably free, expressionistic manner, with splashes and running streaks of glaze in may colours, predominantley white, yellow, black and brown, with areas of the fired body visible, the artist has vigorously manipulated the top section, which has deep finger gouges around its circumference, the lower two sections are inscribed with letters (inscription TBC), beneath some areas of glaze and on the unglazed areas the surface of the body has been incised with comparatively standardised, geometric decoration.
Simon Carroll brought a unique energy to the traditional medium of slip-decorated earthenware. The deep gouges he left in the clay are an exaggeration of the marks normally left by the potter’s hands and have a boldly expressive effect.
