The bishop in cap and gown, bearded and seated upon a throne, holding in his right hand a quill (also interpreted as a birch or a bunch of hyssop), and in his left hand an open Bible inscribed : VERBVM DOMINI ("The Word of God"). In base, between two bendlets embattled, counter-embattled, a beast (? bear) semy of mullets with a naked child between its paws, the whole between two stars of six points (or suns with six rays) and in chief three roses. In the legend the 2nd to 5th words inclusive have been substituted for others originally engraved, (perhaps when Barnes was Bishop of Carlisle, 1570-77).
