An interesting and detailed letter from Major John Francis (Carmarthen) documenting the story of a Mr Picton (Llandeilo; 1847-1927), who as a young man was employed as a shoe-smith at Llandovery by the brothers Jones who were great cattle dealers and founders of the 'Bank-yr-eidon-du'. [1931] This information was transmitted to Mjor Francis by Mr Picton some years before his death. It stands as an important record of the activities of the drovers in south-west Wales during the second half of the 19th century. Mr Picton ended his life as the respected Master of Llandeilo Workhouse.
