Remains of an unidentified animal.
SMR 19 animal remains are predominantly from Early Medieval contexts associated with the reuse of the Bronze Age burial ground. 82% of the material was recovered from the outer ditch of the burials. Very few animal bones were found among the corn drying kilns. The vast majority of bones are from cattle and sheep/goats, with cattle representing the larger portion. Other species, from horses down to small rodents are also present but in small numbers.
Radiocarbon dating from these bones show a range from 648-707 AD up to 1063-1158 AD. So the vast majority of bones are early medieval, with a few from post 1070. A handful of bones may also be residual from the earlier Bronze Age burials.
