Greek-owned tramp steamers were a familiar sight in Cardiff, many of them having been built originally for Cardiff owners. An exception was the 4,816 gross ton Eugenie Livanos built in 1936 by Gray of West Hartlepool for Livanos Bros. of Piraeus. S.S. EUGENIE LIVANOS (4816gt). Built 1936 by William Gray at West Hartlepool for Theofano Maritime Co. Ltd. (managed by N. G. Livanos), Chios. She was stopped by German auxiliary cruiser MICHEL on the 8th December 1942, and sunk by gunfire about 300 miles southeast of Madagascar. Eleven of her crew were killed and the remainder were taken as prisoners of war aboard of the raider. (ref. : C. Hocking - "Dictionary of Disasters at Sea during the Age of Steam")
