A V-shaped cutting tool, part of a clogmaker's knife known as a gripper. The knife was used to cut the channel round the edge of the wooden sole into which the leather uppers were nailed. The cutting tool - the bit- fitted into a slot in the beam of the gripper and was held in place by tightening a bolt.
