The saddle is built around a wooden frame. A thin sheet of iron seperates the top of the frame and the leather. Two pads, made of a rough textile filled with straw with a layer of wool between the textile and straw and backed with leather, are nailed to the wooden frame. Two leather straps on each side emerge from under the saddle where thir ends are nailed to the wooden frame. On one side these straps are approx 1600mm long and end in buckles (one missing), on the other side the straps are approx 570mm long and have holes for a buckle. AT thje back of the saddle between the leather uppers and the textile pads is a 'handle' / loop of leather fixed to the wooden frame. The back strap (F74.133.4 , AC.2005.75) was found threaded through this loop, but was removed to make storage easier [R.P. 23/05/2006]
