This sherd of glass is from the window of a Roman era house.
The glass is quite clear with a very slight grey-green tint. The sherd has an uneven thickness and has a very gentle curve to it. One face is quite coarse while the other is very smooth.
Window glass was introduced to Britain in the mid-1st century AD but is rarely found in early contexts, meaning this piece is most likely from the 2nd to 4th centuries. (Price, 1995)
Similar window glass has been found in South Wales at the Bear House Field III, Caerleon, from building VIII of the Civil Settlement (Boon 1966).
