25-27. Sword blade - Ewart Park Type (3 conjoining fragments) Combined surviving length 354.0mm Combined weight 374.7g
Blade from a leaf-shaped sword. The blade section is uniform in shape throughout having a gently rounded mid-section and gently concave outer section, coming to slightly bevelled edges. This is typical of Ewart Park swords, although it is not possible from the blade shape to identify it to Step type.
Mid to upper blade fragment, narrow at upper end, then widening with a concave curve towards the lower break. Upper break cross section has a gently rounded cross-section with slight bevelling at the edges (3.0mm wide). Lower break cross section has a gently rounded mid-section and gently concave outer section, curving to bevelled edges. In side view, the lower end shows bending caused by deliberate breakage of the blade. Striations on blade edge indicate sharpening. On the convex side near the lower break, are many rounded impact marks, created by blows from a blunted implement, when broken in antiquity. Good break fit with sword blade fragment 13. Blade edges are largely preserved, although a 15.0mm middle section on one side has been recently damaged. Green patina, with light green carbonate concretion on one upper side near break.
