Casgliadau Arlein

An example of Hull's Type 106, a hinged T-shaped brooch with raised cross hatched lozenges on the bow and appendages to either side of the upper bow. There is an imperforate tab at the head, trace of a slight, projecting foot and a one sided catchplate. Other examples of the type from south Wales include two from Caerwent and two from Caerleon. That from the Fortress Baths, Caerleon, was recovered from a Hadrianic-Antonine context and corroborates the suggestiong that these brooches were current to around the mid-second century. That from the extra mural area of the same site has three lozenges on the bow but they are cross hatched like the Usk example, not enamelled like those from the Amphitheatre.
