Fine, slightly tapering tube of bronze made by lapping over a thin sheet of metal. It was thought at first that this was perhaps intended for use as a tubular rivet; but microscopic examination shows that the hole at the wider end is original, having been punched through after the tube had been rolled. This hole seems intended to take a pin or rivet to fix the tube, perhaps to the end of a fine thong or lace. Mr DM Wilson suggests that the object itself may be a shoe-lace tag of the type rarely found by the ankles of skeletons in Anglo Saxon graves.
