Fragement of a bronze awl, missing it's point. The tang is circular in cross-section with a flat squared-off end. Towards the centre the diameter expands and the cross-section transitions to square. Identified as Thomas (2005) GROUP 1 type - double-pointed with central swelling with one or both ends being used. Needham (2015, 89) further sub-divides this group and the Rhiw awl would fit into either Group 1B or 1D having a square cross-section at the transition. Group 1 awls mainly accompany Beaker period burials but are also sometimes found with burials assocaited with colecred urns and other EBA vessels. Association with elliptical pommel and collared urn suggests date range between 1950-1600 BC.
