Poster advertising Europe Day, 9 May 2008. Produced by the European Commission. Inscribed: EUROPE DAY in schools / 9 May / SPREAD THE WORD / 2008.
Europe Day is held on 9 May each year to celebrate peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the 'Schuman declaration' of 1950. Robert Schuman, France's Foreign Minister, set out his vision for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, a proposal which paved the way for the establishment of the European Union.
The poster was acquired from the European Commission Office in Wales following its closure in Feburary 2020. On 31 January 2020, the United Kingdom left the European Union. As a result, the European Commission Representation in the UK ceased all activities on 1 February 2020, meaning that its Office in Wales closed. The closure of the EC Office in Wales marked the end of a 44 year presence in Cardiff (1976-2020). The Office was originally situated on Cathedral Road, later moving to Caspian Way in Cardiff Bay.
