Patent mandrel head c.1900. Mandrel head with removeable points secured by screws (one point missing), c.1900. Stamped with an illegible Sheffield maker's mark and the patent mark '? THOMAS' PATENT'. Inscription DBLE SHEAR refers to the quality of the steel. Inscription WH is William Harry of Felinfoel, Llanelli (born c.1870) who worked in anthracite mines in Cross Hands area. Probably never much used although has been hafted. Rational for such mandrels was that points only could be brought to the surface for sharpening and points only replaced when worn out. Typically sold by sales representatives at the end of Union meetings.
