Casgliadau Arlein

This bowl in a copper alloy, probably bronze, was found in a highly corroded state, and it was fortunate that Mr. Graham Morgan of the Welsh Museums Service, cons. Lab., was able to take immediate charge of its lifting and conservation, a task completed by Mrs W. Turner.
In fact, little of the original metal has survived corrosion, although the shape of the cross-section illustrated as fig 6 is secure, the thickness of the metal is approximate. The structure of the vessel, although roughly visable on the corroded vessel, is only completely apparent as a result of X-ray photographs. This is not a bowl made from a single piece of metal but instead it has been built up from a series of overlapping sheets rivetted into place. At least four separate sheets have been used, secured by rivets which the X-ray photographs suggest to be rectilinear in cross-section. There is at least one hole through the rim flange, perhaps to hold a ring for suspension.
