Built 1924 as a passenger ferry of 2294gt by William Denny & Brothers Ltd., Dumbarton for the Southern Railway. As built, she carried 1300 cross-channel passengers (354 in berths) on the night service between Southampton and St Malo. 1939 – Requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to a troop carrier. 1945 – Returned to Southern Railway and rebuilt as a car ferry of 1769gt returning to service in June 1947 on the Dover – Boulogne run. In this guise, she could carry 70 cars, (loaded by crane) and 363 passengers. 1948 – Ownership passed to British Railways. Her stern was modified in 1953 to enable a drive-on service. 1958 – Sold to Viking Line (Gunnar Eklund & Henning Rundberg), Åland, and renamed VIKING.
