¾ Port bow view of S.S. ELKANAH CROWELL at Cardiff Docks.
S.S. ELKANAH CROWELL was a N3-SA1 type (1791gt). Type N3-S ships were coal-fired cargo ships commissioned into the United States Navy during the Second World War. They were typically used to ferry supplies for theatres such as the D-Day landings. Built 1942 by Walter Butler Shipbuilders, Superior, Wisconsin, and delivered to Britain in June 1943. 1951 - Sold to Williamson & Co., of Hong Kong and renamed INCHULVA. November 11, 1953 - Chinese Communist shore batteries (Rueters reported them as "two junks" fired on ss INCHULVA (under the British flag) while she was entering Wenchow, 300 miles north of Straits of Formosa. After this she was reported as scrapped but The Elkanah Crowell seems to have lived on as ZHAN DOU 77 (at Shanghai in 1983). She was then renamed HE PING 77. The following hierarchy not confirmed : - ELKANAH CROWELL = INCHULVA = HANSFORD = HO PING 77 = ZHAN DOU 77 = HE PING 77
