Roman copper alloy animal figurine
Small figurine of a ram, complete. The ram stands with his head erect and turned slightly to the left. Cast, with fleece represented by circles, punched or incised. Laboratory analysis detects traces of silver, the remnant, perhaps of plating now lost. The ram, as a symbol of fertility, was normally associated with Mercury, and the present example probably formed part of a group, with Mercury, ram and perhaps cockerel also, cast separately and fixed to a common base.
