A naturally squarish slab of Old Red Sandstone has been used in a variety of ways: (a) the top, bottom, and both sides show traces of polish, presumably through use as a rubbing-stone; (b) subsequently, all but the left-hand side have lost part of their polished areas and have become slightly dished through wetting; (c) the top surface has a long, fairly deep groove, presumably for sharpening pins; (d) the right-hand side has a number of very shallow, roughly parallel grooves, which may be the result of whetting.
