Table cover
Hexagonal patchwork table cloth, formerly belonging to the Jones Parry family of Llwyn-Onn, Wrexham. Made from pieced hexagons, arranged in concentric rows in a flowerhead pattern, separated by rows of white and off-white hexagons. The fabrics date from 1780-1830 and are mainly dress fabrics, with some furnishing glazed chintz. Maker unknown.
The patchwork retains many of its tacking stitches and the paper templates used in its construction. Many of these have print on them. This can be seen through a section where the machine stitches attaching the lining have been undone (see below).
Currently lined with cream cotton calico which has been machine-stitched all around the edges. At one end, the backing has been extended so as to give a continuous upper edge, folded over to allow for insertion of a pole for hanging. The backing is made from a single piece of fabric. The calico has some areas where there is a pink staining (discoloration) on some of the yarns (in the vertical direction, if the quilt is hung using the pole sleeve). This appears to be intrinsic to the fabric rather than something that was sustained later on.
