These are the moderately preserved remains of a younger middle adult (25-35 years). Who was probably female.

The burial is from Phase H: 772-1019 AD.

She was buried in an crouched position in simple grave. This is very rare because only two adult females were buried in crouched positions. SK44 was buried on her right side with her legs flexed in front of her pelvis, her left hand under her jaw and her right hand resting in front of her pelvis. Her torso is slightly supine (rolled onto her back) with the right leg flexed more tightly that the right, which is slightly lower.

Analysis (strontium and oxygen isotopes) indicates she was local to the area. She had periostitis in on her right leg indicating a mild non-specific infection.
So. neither her origin or health status are unique enough to explain her highly unusual burial position.

The burial is associated with SK45, SK46 and SK47.
