“Severn Tag” electronic toll transponder in use from 2007. These were an innovative alternative to cash payments for frequent users of the bridges and were pre-paid by cheque or direct debit, and from 2016 also online. Tags provided a discount for frequent users and reduced staffing needed at the toll plazas as vehicles equipped with Tags used unstaffed lanes.
