Two rim and side fragments of a Hofheim cup, similar to 88.3H/11.21 and 11.22. Blue-green glass, with ground rim, and bands of horizontal wheel-incised lines beneath rim and down side. The diameter of the rim is 8 cms.
This is an example of one of the commonest early blown forms, often given the name 'Hofheim cup' and one of six fragments found on this site. The shape is simple, ranging from hemispherical to more carinated, with slightly inturned rim, ground smooth. The base is sometimes flat or slightly concave, but often has a high central pointed kick.Decoration is in the form of groups of horizontal whell-incised lines or grooves. The majority are blue-green or pale green, but brightly coloured examples also occur. The form is essentially a pre-Flavian one, found commonly on sites in the north-western provinces from the Tiberian period to the third quarter of the first century. Only two examples have previously come from Caerleon, one dark blue and one blue-green, both from contexts in the vicus dated to before AD130. [Allen, 1990 Unpublished report]
