Jug of pale creamware, baluster-shaped with inset base, plain strap handle and slightly up-turned pouring lip; decorated with black transfer-prints: opposite the handle a shield inscribed 'THOS. JAMES' between dotted lines, crowned with a basket of flowers, an elaborate floral swag to the left, a floral spray to the right, an uninscribed ribbon below; to the right of the shield an enamelled transfer print of a frigate on the port tack and with open gun ports, emblems below it including Neptune, his trident, a cannon, an anchor, a buoy, a drum, two standards, a pistol, two swords and a caduceus; to the left of the shield an oval print of a man and three women in woodland beside a plinth on which sit two amorous doves, an elaborate floral border with emblems of love at the top (a bow and quiver, a heart, a trumpet).
