Casgliadau Arlein

A moderately preserved individual inhumantion from the Roman era with evidence of decapitation.

The individual was a young adult aged from 17-25 based on skeletal fusion and dental wear and was probably male. They were buried in a prone position oriented east-west in an individual grave cut with some evidence of having been buried in a coffin. Interestingly, this individual's head was decapitated from the body and deposited at their feet facing towards the rest if their body. No associated grave goods have been found.

Their left femur was radiocarbon dated to 126 - 350 cal AD (SUERC-97814 (GU57343)).

This individual had dental caries and degenerative joint disease of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), indicated by moderate osteophyte growth on the mandibular fossa of the left temporal bone.

Elements present: Crania, mandible, vertebrae, ribs, pelvic girdle, L humerus, L and R radius, L and R unla, L and R femur, unidentified hand and foot bones, miscellaneous unidentified fragments.
