Banner
Green banner appliqued with a red dragon motif and the inscription 'CYMORTH I FENYWOD YNG NGHYMRU / WOMENS AID WALES'. Also features a female gender symbol with a house in the centre, made from black fabric. Maker unknown. From the collection of Thalia Campbell and included in the '100 Years of Women's Banners' exhibition she co-ordinated and curated. Thalia Campbell was a member of the Women for Life on Earth group who established the peace camp at Greenham Common in September 1981.
Banner made from single piece of green 2/1 synthetic twill fabric, with 6.5cm wide turn-back at sides allowing for insertion of pole for carrying the banner. Strip of dark green 2.5cm wide Petersham ribbon is stitched along reverse of upper edge. Nine hanging loops of the same material are machine stitched to upper edge. Red dragon cut from synthetic fabric, edges are turned under and machine-stitched in place. 'WOMENS AID WALES' lettering cut out from black synthetic fabric and attached via a non-woven iron-on adhesive coated interfacing (edges are left raw). Other lettering made from adhesive coated bandage material. Chalk marks from drafting out dragon and female gender symbol still visible on fabric.
