Roman copper alloy disc brooch
Small oval disc brooch with a conical black glass inset. The surrounding groove is decorated with stamped S-shapes and the whole has been gilded. The catchplate, turnover and spring survive. Riha 1979, Type 3.17 and Bohme 1972, type 45. This form of brooch, both oval and circular, although the oval appears to have been more popular than the circlar, came into production c. AD 250 and continued beyond the Roman period, apparently being most fashionable in the 4th century. Condition: pin and hinge pin missing.
