Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is incomplete, missing the neck and the top of the body (with a surviving length of 27.8mm and a weight of 22.3g). The body is slightly open below the missing neck and has a maximum width of 38.9mm and a thickness of 8.2mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven surviving bold and curved ribs, producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59), Type I. The ribs are slightly wider at the base and narrow towards the neck. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge.
